Whistler is the only place in Canada that offers Via Ferrata. It is Italian for “Iron Way” but you do not have to be an Iron Man or Iron Woman to conquer this 800 feet vertical mountain climb to the summit. This thrilling, safe, unique and accessible climbing adventure is for people of all ages, 14 and older. It’s unbelievable that anyone physically able can do this climb. This climbing excursion is one of the safest adventures because the route has fixed cables and metal ladder rungs to help people easily maneuver and climb to the top of the mountain.
I was excited to climb to the top of Whistler Peak. Throughout the day, my climbing guide, Jeff encouraged me and gave me valuable technical instructions and explanations of on how to use the equipment. I used a lanyard system that clipped onto the cable hooks to help me safely climb the ladder rungs. I recommend this adventure to anyone seeking a challenge. The primary challenge I had to overcome was a mental one – my fear of heights. I knew I was clipped in and that the cables would hold me, yet my knees were still knocking together as I climbed higher. The trick was to climb with my legs and not pull myself from the arms. There were some long reaches I had to go for but I just leaned into the rock and extended my leg. I don’t know if I was sweating from the sun beaming on my back or if it was because I was working up a sweat. Either way, it felt great!
When I reached the summit, I had a breathtaking unobstructed 360-degree view of Whistler and its surrounding mountains. I have to admit though, that the next day my arms and legs were feeling a bit stiff…but it was a good feeling.
To sum up my adventure in one word: BREATHTAKING
