Season 2

Whistler, British Columbia

Peak 2 Peak

The Peak 2 Peak Gondola stretches over 4.4 kilometers, connecting the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. Everyone can appreciate the marvel of this construction as they look up at the gap between the mountains from the valley floor. Visitors can board from the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler or from the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain. This experience can be enjoyed year-round. This link is an accomplishment that has broken three world records!

  • The longest unsupported span of 3.024 kilometers;
  • The highest lift at 436 meters over Fitzsimmons Creek;
  • The longest continuous lift system.

There are only 2 glass bottom cabins out of the 28 cabins, and they are distinguished by the outer color being silver and the non-bottom cabins being red. An enclosed barrier protects the glass-bottom area. I waited in a separate line for the glass-bottomed cabin; it was worth the wait. I enjoyed an eagle’s view of the alpine environment, the beautiful tall trees, bubbling creeks and trails. All the seats in the cabin offer a 360-degree view of the glaciers and coastal mountain ranges. Be sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy the experience fully, to explore the trails, and to catch the gondola back to your destination.

During the ski season, I can see how this gondola reduces traffic congestion and cuts down the travel time of skiers and snowboarders. They will have convenient access to both mountains at the tips of their skis.

To sum up my adventure in one word: INNOVATIVE

  • The Gondola travels 7.5 meters per second
  • The ride time peak to peak is approximately 11 minutes
  • One cabin departs every 49 seconds (there are a total of 28 cabins)
  • Each cabin seats 22 and can carry up to 6 standing
  • 2050 people travel on the gondola per hour each way
  • The height of the towers range from 35 to 65 meters (100 - 213 feet)
  • Carbon footprint: 68% fewer trees were cleared than for the construction of a conventional lift
  • Peak 2 Peak uses 50% less energy than the Village Gondola
  • All cabins feature glass for best viewing and less scratching than Plexiglas
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • The Gondola is the most wind tolerant lift at Whistler Blackcomb: it is safe to run in winds gusting up to 80km/hr
